The Basics
You will need 3 things to get a web site working:
- A web site address (aka Domain Name) e.g. www.enliten-it.com
- Hosting space on a web server. This server stores all your web pages and allows anyone in the world access to them.
- Pages for your web site (or at least a temporary holding Home page).

Types of Site
There are basically 3 types of web sites:
- A Static site
Basically an information site that provides details (words and pictures) about a company's products and services. It is called a static site as the pages are changed infrequently.
- A Content Managed site
This is a dynamic site where the content of pages changes on a frequent basis. Good examples would include Estate Agents; Car Dealerships; Holiday companies etc. where images and descriptions change weekly.
- An E-commerce site
These sites are used to sell goods - basically an on-line shop. E-commerce systems work on the same basis as Content Management sites but they are linked to databases running behind them. Good examples include Amazon, Empire Direct, FigLeaves etc.
Search Engine Optimisation (general information)
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is not magic - it's all about building pages ethically and with relevant content. Basically this dictates where your web site will appear on a word search. Getting it to appear on the first page of say a google search is difficult.
Search engines are looking to display the most relevant results they can for the keywords you type in, so it makes sense to write pages full of content about the subject you are trying to sell or promote. This information is created in Tags that sit in the background of each of your web pages.
Pay per Click (SEO)
Google AdWords is a quick and simple way to purchase highly targeted cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-impression (CPM) advertising. AdWords ads are displayed along with search results on Google (usually to the right). You choose keywords for which your advert will appear and specify the maximum amount you are willing to pay for each click e.g. Max £150 per month and 15 pence per click. The more you are willing to spend the higher up the rankings you will appear. You can also specify the times of the day when you are willing to spend money.
